Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Pomona, CA Essay Editing tutoring
This was our first session. I got to know the student, asking him questions about school and his assignments. We completed his spelling and inquiry assignment. His list focused on words with silent beginning consonant sounds. We also discussed the meanings of the words. We also did some research on the history of boats and discovered that the Chinese invented the rudder controlled sailboat. Finally, in preparation for an end of the month writing assignment, I gave him a notebook to journal in using a T-chart to record things he did on one side and his thoughts and ideas about each experience on the other side of the chart. I enjoyed working with him and look forward to helping him achieve his goals.

Tonight's focus was on studying for World History and working through slope intercept form in Algebra 1. The majority of the evening was spent on World History. First, we started off with the student's study guide, then I showed him the videos dealing with the Renaissance. After that I showed him examples of the artwork he was studying and helped him understand how they were made in an effort to help him retain the information. Overall, it seemed like with one more review of the study guide he would be ready. We worked through some of his Algebra questions, however, I did leave him with an example on how to do the problem he was working on. He is meant to finish those before school tomorrow.

The client and I continued with Romeo and Juliet, Act 3, Scene 4. She has short essay questions that she must answer and turn in weekly. We went over some of her past answers and discussed where she might have missed points and how to make her answers stronger. This week, she has shared the question before it's due. We brainstormed on ways to respond. She's going to draft an answer and we're going to meet tomorrow to go over her final version. Then we will continue reading.

We continued revising the student's college admission/ personal narrative essay. The goal of this next draft is to add more of his emotions and thoughts throughout the events to capture his experience of the events, rather than just the events themselves. We added some background information to show his relationship to football before the summer workouts. To break him out of his tendency to summarize events, we tried to add in details that informed his experience of those events--how they made him feel, what he thought about them, etc. That way, his voice and character can start to come through. We only finished revising 2 paragraphs--I didn't want to push him too hard and make this a stressful experience; he's still building his confidence with this type of writing, but he's getting more comfortable with it and is showing a lot of improvement.

The student began by reading the story of Io from Ovid. We talked about the historical basis for mythology and the exile of Ovid. Next, he learned the neuter declension and new vocabulary. We talked about English words derived from the Latin. He is picking up new vocabulary very fast. We also discussed substantives. He translated four sentences that used the new vocabulary and neuter nouns/adjectives. For next time, he will write a 3-5 paragraph essay comparing and contrasting democracy and communism using his class reading from Fahrenheit 451.
