Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

Plantation, FL SAT tutoring
The student and I had an excellent first session together. We began by talking about her experience with the PSAT and her goals for college admissions. After this, we went over the structure and format of the SAT, discussed what content is tested, and looked through a full-length exam. The student learned the rules for scoring, and we used these to derive a strategy for making educating guesses. Next, we began working on the math section. We discussed the two types of problems and the four major content areas tested in this section. The student and I reviewed two important mathematical problem-solving strategies and applied these to sample problems. Then we worked on some practice problems together. She did a great job on these! I assigned her to skim through some of the relevant chapters on the textbook.

The student and I started with a practice SAT essay question. We created an outline for the question, and in the process, developed a general outline for answering questions. She was quick to think of an example, and understands the importance of the thesis statement. We talked about making sure the essay appropriately introduces ideas and point of view, and includes a paragraph that analyzes the examples and how they relate to the thesis. We then worked on math concepts. Most of the questions focused on linear systems, and we talked about how to find the equation of the line, identify intercepts, find the slope, and reflect over the line. As we went through the questions, I mentioned some test taking tips, like estimating and eliminating clearly incorrect answers, that will save time on test day. We also practiced graphing the lines to help visualize the answers. We went through a few verbal questions, noting that some common questions include neither, nor, less vs fewer, and agreement between singular and plural. For next week, I'd like her to finish the math diagnostic test and write a sample essay. If possible, she should send me the essay and the math scores before our session, but if not, we can review the work in the session.
