Algebra Session #8: Monday: 8:30PM-9:30PM. The student has her Unit 5 test this Wednesday. First, we assessed the topics covered and tried to "think like the teacher" in terms of understanding book practice problems and worksheets assigned. Why did the teacher assign certain sections in the book, and how does this inform test preparation? Getting this large picture helped us focus on types of problems and concepts likely to be tested. First, we made sure to review conics, such as circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas, which correspond to the book sections 5-3 A, B, and C. In completing a hyperbola practice problem, the student pulled out her flash card with definitions and that assisted in concept review. We solidified the abstract definition of an ellipse and hyperbola with respect to foci: An ellipse is the set of all points P in a plane where the sum of the distance from P to two fixed points (aka, foci) is a constant (2a); A hyperbola is the set of all points P in a plane where the absolute value of the difference between the distances from P to two fixed points (aka, foci) is a constant (2a). We also addressed section 5-4 A and 5-4 B, which cover quadratic-linear systems and quadratic-quadratic systems. The student wanted to clarify how to solve a problem symbolically, so I demonstrated how she can use the textbook to learn the concept and we completed a textbook example problem to firm up her understanding. I had her write instructions so that she has a system in place on how to approach this type of problem in the future. I encouraged her to become familiar with how the text is organized because it helps present information and provides useful charts and examples. For instance, she used the table on p. 407 to make a flash card that systematically elucidates how to use coefficients and signs to identify the kind of conic represented by a given equation. She is meeting with her teacher one on one, and I encouraged her to prepare for these sessions by coming prepared with specific questions from practice problems and making sure to get all the answers to worksheet and homework problems. Checking her answers will clarify where the conceptual gaps are, and she will be able to work on them with her teacher. Best of luck with the test!
