The student is to keep practicing the techniques we are talking about and try to focus on noting exactly what the question is asking of her. As she evaluates answer choices, she should do her best to determine whether or not the answer addresses the question. I think these two strategies will be most beneficial to her and can help make the biggest difference when she gets tough questions.

Today the student and I discussed cardiovascular respiration and some physics. She did not take the practice exam yesterday as we discussed, but will do it tomorrow. I focused on helping her understand that the practice exam is just that--practice. No need to feel too nervous and to just get it over with, as we need the data from it. We worked on O2-hemoglobin affinity curves and the pathway of oxygen and CO2 in the body. We drew some diagrams and figures, and then did some questions. We then ended with some circuit questions, which she did fine on. I think those are important to go over, but not to spend too much time on, as they are relatively low yield in comparison to most systems bio questions. She will take the graded MCAT exam tomorrow and we will reevaluate our path forward on that.

Today, we worked through two passages and one workbook passage. The student continues to refine his approach and thinking. Over the next few weeks, I will push him to use the correct approach and thinking more quickly, though he has not yet had problems with time on his own practice tests. Right now, our aim is to consistently employ the most efficient approach of reading for the purpose and then answering with evidence.

We went over a difficult CARS passage. I recommended two strategies: first -- summarizing each paragraph with a brief phrase, and second -- before reading the answers to a question, trying to predict the correct answer and then finding the answer choice that matched the prediction the best. It seems that when the student understands a passage well, he scores well, but when he doesn't understand the passage he is at 50% or less. The best way to increase his CARS score will be to focus on a solid understanding of each passage before he even attempts the questions; even if this takes a little longer, missing a few questions at the end due to time will have a lesser impact on his score than missing most questions for several passages that he did not take enough time to really understand. It will also be important to make sure he clearly understands the question stem while answering.
