Session Summaries by Anatomy Tutors

Plantation, FL Anatomy tutoring
Today was the first meeting with the student and we primarily focused on her science assignments which covered DNA: its structure, what it codes for & timelines for scientific discovery. Her assignments asked her to fill in some questions whose answers were straight out of the book so instead of helping her find the answers, I discussed with her the topics covered in the section so that she can learn the material and not just copy the answers from the page. I helped her visualize what DNA looks like, used analogies to help her understand what it is, and explained the importance of the scientific discoveries to modern day medicine & research. To help her remember the four nucleotide bases that make up DNA, we agreed upon the mnemonic phrase "All Tigers Can Grow" to represent the four bases (ATCG) while placing them in their correct base pairs (A+T, C+G). Although a bit of memorization on this topic is necessary, I wanted her to know why and how the bases pair with each other and why that is important for further biological processes. Once we finished her science assignments, we moved onto her math assignments where she was working with the Pythagorean Theorem. She seemed to already know how to use the Theorem but I could tell that she was trying to memorize the correct form of the equation, instead of looking at the specific problem and analyzing which to use based on mathematical knowledge. I gave her some example problems and showed her how she can always determine the correct way to solve the problems and this caught on with her much more quickly than trying to memorize things. We moved onto some word problems and she did a great job being able to draw out the problems and solve them correctly. So long as she does not try to memorize problems, I believe that she will do well on her upcoming quizzes and tests on this topic. I left her with her optional problems to solve for extra practice to ensure that she will get an A on her next test. After math, we had some time to review her Texas history coursework, which she had already started but I gave her some helpful ideas on the project she was working on.

We are reviewing Org Chem I. The student worked through several problems involving: addition of HBr to olefins, reaction of alcohols with PBr3 and POCl3, opening of epoxides with nucleophiles, addition of borane to olefins, formation of epoxides from halohydrins, and how to approach a retro synthesis problem. I will give him a few synthesis problems to practice on before we meet again.

The student and I emphasized the following concepts in preparation for his upcoming assessment: atomic structure, electronegativity, atomic radius, and ionization energy. He still needs additional practice on the periodic trends and I am in the process of creating an assignment that will help him in that regard. We concluded the session with converting quadratic equations between standard and vertex form. He needs additional practice with this as well as another concise explanation.

The student had an assignment about waves, and it gave us a great opportunity to fill in the gaps in his knowledge and help him with his skills. I pointed out that the equations are not difficult, but most of the issues are around the new vocabulary of waves. Then we worked on a review sheet about waves and Doppler to help him get ready for his test this week.

We reviewed balancing chemical equations that the student will have a retake quiz on and she did well with the practice problems we did together. We also went over adding phases to the reactions, which her teacher should go over more in these few days. We will talk about the other classes and see where she can earn points back next session.

The student and I reviewed class notes on solutions. We went through each slide and I explained it in a way that makes more sense by using examples she is more familiar with. Today was just information review and no practice problems. We will continue with the slide show on the next tutoring session.
