Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"When we met Tuesday, the student and I worked on factoring rational expressions. She told me that she had done very well in the last unit on factoring polynomials and had been very happy with her test grade at the end. Her class was now extending these ideas to rational expressions by factoring the polynomials in the numerator and denominator and canceling all common factors. After our sessions, the student seemed much more comfortable and consistent."
"Today, the student and I practiced more with fractions, learning more methods that might help her simplify them (i.e. divisibility rules, prime factorization, etc.). We also spent some time filling out an entire multiplication table, and although the student did not know several of the multiplication facts, she certainly knew more this week than she did last week! I could see that her confidence increased significantly by the end of this session. I created another set of homework problems for her (two pages, front and back) which should she have completed by Sunday, March 16."
"We reviewed what the student has been working on the last few weeks. They haven't had the fractions unit in math yet this year, so we went over how to do it and then took several steps back and talked about factors."
"The student and I spent most of this session working on re-take packets for Math and Science. Math we worked on exponents, algebraic properties, and evaluating algebraic expressions. Science we worked on plant and animal cells. She didn't need too much help with the work itself, but instead help with staying on task. We also worked on not necessarily writing algebraic formulas in the left-to-right order in which she reads the word problem."
"I helped the student study for her upcoming math test. I had her explain and teach me the various topics as a way of reaffirming her own understanding. I provided a few clarifications, but she seems to have a strong understanding of the materials. I expect her to do well on the upcoming test."
"We went over problems that she was tested on in the beginning of the semester. We spent the hour going over how to make categorical, grouped, and cumulative frequency distributions. We calculated the range, the midpoint, the width, and the upper and lower boundaries. We plan on meeting again for a longer session later this evening."
