ASPIRE Tutoring review by Greg in Oklahoma City, OK
I started the student with some review problems as a warm up exercise. This included the 7's 8's 9's times tables, a long multiplication problem, a percentage problem, and a reducing fractions problem. I reviewed the homework problems she had done over unit conversions. She got almost all of them correct, which we were happy about. The couple that she struggled on were problems where the units were given as a mix of units (e.g. 3 feet 6 inches). So we reviewed how to convert to all inches before proceeding. We did a quick review of mean, median, mode, and range for the third time now. She was able to remember how to calculate each without any prompting. It took her a few seconds for everything to click, but she was able to do it. We then moved on to the next lesson on probability. This included simple probability and independent/ dependent probability. She seemed to understand the concept of simple probability (e.g. 1 in 6 chance of rolling a certain number using a six-sided die). It took a bit to apply this to when there are multiple events occurring (e.g. drawing two cards from a deck). After doing several examples and using some physical prompts to demonstrate the numbers involved, she seemed to do well. With the last bit of remaining time we covered how to read tables, charts, and graphs. The student usually does very well on these types of problems, so we didn't spend too long on any one piece. This brought us to the end of the unit on measurements and analysis. I assigned her to do the mini-test on the sections covering mean, median, mode, probability, and charts and graphs. Over the weekend, I plan to assign her to do the unit review test that also includes unit measurements.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Peter in Oklahoma City, OK
I gave the student some sentence completion questions using only the vocabulary from the sections we've done together. He still needs to check back to his notes to remember the definitions, but some of the words have stuck. I have encouraged him to keep at it until they stick. I will also keep thinking up different activities with them to try and keep him engaged with the words. After the sentence completion practice, we worked on more reading comprehension. I advised him to scan the questions before reading the passages, watching for questions that ask about specific line numbers. We implemented this strategy together, and we will continue working on it in future sessions. To improve his reading comprehension, I encouraged him to keep reading habitually. I assigned him to read news articles for next time.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Xuan in Oklahoma City, OK
In this session, the student and I first began by going over vocabulary. We also did a pre-test for her vocabulary for this week, and reviewed new vocabulary words and word roots. Following this, the student and I talked about the passage that she had finished reading for this week. She gave a good summary of main idea of the passage. We also talked about how to interpret certain sentences and words in context. She did a good job using her knowledge of word roots to help her understand the meaning of a word. In the last part of the session, the student and I began reading another passage of creative nonfiction. When prompted, She was able to point to parts of the passage that supported her interpretation of certain phrases and sentences. I left the student with the rest of the passage to read for next time, and with three more reading comprehension passages to work on.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Kurtis in Oklahoma City, OK
I introduced more test-level vocabulary. The student and I analyzed an ACT sample essay question and then read a sample student essay. After discussion, student wrote his own response to sample essay. We analyzed his response, reminding him how to incorporate personal examples into his writings and language usage. Client was given homework: find a satirical news story online and the non-satirical version and summarize each article (at least 1 paragraph each).

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Alicia in Oklahoma City, OK
I checked the student's additional practice homework on decimals, word problems, and rounding that I assigned during the last session. He answered every question correctly. We reviewed his rounding worksheet/practice from last session, and he corrected his mistakes. We practiced rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, and ten thousand. I then gave the student a practice on rounding to complete on his own, and he correctly answered 95% of the problems. I assigned him rounding and estimation problems for additional practice as well as a mixed 3rd grade review sheet. He was very engaged throughout the session.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Chrysa in Oklahoma City, OK
The student showed a deep understanding for all concepts, as usual! He is doing very well in all practice problems, both in his book and the ones that I give him. Today we covered the remainder of genetics, which was about Mutations, Autosomal and Sex Linked Disorders, and Gene Linkage. We then proceeded to talk about Evolution and Diversity; we covered the Origins of Life, Evidence for Evolution and the two theories of Evolution. An updated study guide will be sent before next session.
