We went over the first section from the student's GED Math workbook involving negative numbers, fractions, and general algebraic expressions. We also went over the general format of the test and some general methods of doing mathematical expressions by hand. The student seemed to understand the material very well.

Today was the first session with the student, and, after we briefly went over what he and his previous tutor had been covering, he did a 20-minute diagnostic of sample sentence completion and passage reading questions. We first went through the sentence completion questions, and overall he did a great job. He answered all the questions of this type correctly through sound logical reasoning though he was unfamiliar with the vocabulary at times. In those instances, we defined the words he did not know and used them in context. We also covered general test-taking approaches to sentence completion questions and then proceeded to dissecting the reading passage. We evaluated the author's tone, the use of language, and summarized paragraphs as we went along. Overall, the student seems to have a solid grasp over the concepts, and, with regard to the Reading and Writing sections of the SAT, I intend to focus on building his vocabulary and more reading comprehension practice.

Today the student and I reviewed the basic algebraic concepts we went over yesterday. Then, we did some exercises designed to improve her understanding and use of the order of operations. She struggled with the negative signs and multiplying fractions, so we will turn our attention to those topics next. We ended the session by going over a critical reading section she completed for homework. I asked her to complete a full practice test over the weekend.

We did two reading sections. He had done one already, the most trouble coming from vocab. So I told him to make flashcards for the list of words we created from all our work today. The second one had a lot of new vocab as well. After we did two drills in the front of the prep book. At the end, I reiterated the importance of the vocab flashcards.
