ASPIRE Tutoring review by Michelle in Boulder, CO
We looked over her SAT scores and we will focus on geometry, passage-based reading, and improving sentences. Still working on reading the questions carefully and focusing on what the author actually says.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Layla in Boulder, CO
This was our first session. I had the student complete problems that assessed both her verbal and math skills. Her reading comprehension was very good. She read quickly and answered questions correctly with little hesitation. This will be an asset to her during the Assessment Exam. When working with the scrambled paragraphs, we worked on making quick decisions, then testing out and revising those decisions. I suggested she link sentences that she knows go together. Additionally, I introduced her to a strategy in which she is to look at the subjects of each sentence to create a flowing progression. When working with logical reasoning as well as math, she demonstrated a need for support. During logical reasoning, she will need to read more closely. Additionally, she showed a need for additional strategies in various math topics such as, exponents, algebraic expressions, and factoring. In future sessions, we will focus on these areas, as well as work to increase her use of logic and quick solutions to solve the math problems.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Nick in Boulder, CO
We reviewed another practice test the student took. At this point, we're able to narrow down missed questions to either minor errors or certain types of questions. We addressed techniques to minimize the small errors and began to extensively practice the types of math questions she struggles a bit more with.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Mark in Boulder, CO
As this was our first session together, we began with an introductory discussion. We discussed the student's previous SAT experiences, concepts she did or did not feel comfortable with, and her past experiences and choices in preparing for the SAT. We then moved into discussing concepts and strategies for the critical reading section, focusing specifically on the passage based questions. A significant point of focus throughout was the idea that SAT questions require a logical and objective approach (which can differ from what is habitually practiced in most English classes). This idea reappeared throughout our discussion of concepts, and I feel that she made progress throughout the session in understanding this approach. We also completed two different sessions of practice problems, which helped in exploring how to apply the concept during the exam setting.

ASPIRE Tutoring review by Gina in Boulder, CO
The student came prepared with 1 math and 1 reading comprehension section completed. He has made tremendous progress, missing only a few in each section. Oftentimes, even when he has missed the question, he's narrowed it down to his answer choice and the correct answer choice. The few he missed on math were the level 5 questions (most difficult) and we talked through how to arrive at the correct answers. The verbal ones he missed were mostly as part of reading passages and when he discussed them, he immediately recognized his mistake. We both agreed spending some time on vocabulary would be beneficial, so we spent an hour studying synonyms, antonyms, and text completion with commonly used SAT words. We then completed one more math section, stopping half way to check answers. He only missed two (two level 5 questions) on the math. I've given some math and vocabulary homework to complete before our next session on Sunday.
