Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session, the student completed 1 page of his math homework. His homework was a review of math skills to prepare for district testing. He primarily practiced the skills of identifying prime and composite numbers and calculating factors and multiples of numbers. He seems to do well with these skills."
"The student worked on integers, distance between integers on a number line, plotting points on a graph, and identifying points on the graph. She did a great job with this skill. We also reviewed some of the problems that she missed on her last test. We went over the next section that will be taught in math, so she will have a head start for tomorrow."
"The student and I started the lesson by working on his math workbook, finding patterns with dividing numbers (i.e. 200/5, 20/5, 2/5). He struggled with the first set of problems, but very quickly "got it" and successfully worked through the remaining hw with little guidance. He then moved on to spelling homework, completing a fill-in-the-blank, words-in-context activity. He had to review the meaning for some words and had to work through some misplaced words, but figured out the correct places for them all. We had about 15 minutes left, so we reviewed math concepts of area and perimeter of rectangles and triangles, and area and circumference of circles. We also practiced extra problems with division. The student is getting really good at mental division!"
"I am working with the student to have all of the multiplication table (0-9) memorized. He has come a long way, and this can be seen with his speed. Each session I give him 2 or 3 different problems I want him to memorize and this seems to be working well for him. He is comfortable with adding and subtracting fractions - this is how far he has gone in school. In the near future I will show him the relationship between fractions and division if he has not already been shown that. We continued with his reading skills which are improving. I left him with a list of words I will quiz him on at our next session."
"The student worked on homework for the first part of our session, and because it was clear that there was some difficulty with the concepts, we continued practicing model whole numbers and missing addends to 100 when she was done with the homework questions. We added to our "math words to know" list and also brainstormed a list of words that tell us to add vs. subtract. We spent the last 20 minutes working through some online practice questions relating to the topics we covered with model numbers. I'm looking forward to next week!"
"We had probably our best session yet. The student is improving in his counting, especially by tens. His focus was excellent during the math portion of tutoring (probably 35 minutes) even when I asked him to write. He's solidifying letter sounds and names and finding words that start with the sound."
