Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed the student's needs for the duration of our tutoring, which included learning topics not covered in class, but what is presented in tests, and reviewing material she doesn't understand well. Exams start next week and she is having trouble completing the study guide. We worked through atomic numbers, atomic mass, charge, valence electrons, balancing equations and solubility, scientific notation, conversions and cross-multiplications, and started talking about significant figures. The student understood the concepts rather quickly, which is great! Her task is to watch a couple videos online and doing math with sig figs."
"As the student has three tests tomorrow, she did not have any homework tonight to allow time to study. She will be tested in the subjects of spelling, math, and science. Her father had already practiced spelling with her and also done some science review. As she felt very comfortable and prepared for the math test, but was concerned about the science test, we devoted the majority of today's session towards reviewing what she'd learned this week in science. She seems to have a great grasp of the science concepts learned this week and knows the science terms well, too. During the final 10-15 minutes of this session, we reviewed and discussed what she should do differently during her tests tomorrow to better manage her time, compared to her prior tests."
"The student's teacher introduced the concept of elastic potential energy. We discussed this concept and the associated formula and solved problems with it. We talked over the two homework problems the student was given. We reviewed the previous session's topics (gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy) and solved a couple of problems which included both the new and the older concepts. I emailed the student a problem to solve for next week that includes all the types of energies we talked about so far."
"The student and I went over the equations that related thermal energy required to causes a phase change, and the ideal gas law. The section was short and we completed it fully, and went over kinetic theory, which had no problems but was required knowledge for the IB examination. So I walked through the proof of 3/2kT=KE with him so that he'd have a good grasp on the concept."
"The student and I went over the following concepts: photoelectric effect - concepts and problems; its relationship with energy and wavelength and frequency. Her attitude was positive and motivated to solve the problems. She seems like she is enjoying chemistry and having many "eureka" moments during the tutoring sessions."
"The student and I went over the inverting and non-inverting gain of op-amp filter concepts and virtual ground. They had a good overall attitude to practice basic concepts and to review concepts covered today. Excellent material as always."
