Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student read a science article about Earth Day and the tension between technology and the environment from the reading program. We then used the comprehension questions as a guide to discuss the article. He then began writing an autobiographical sketch. He then read from "On Writing" and "The Captains Courageous.""
"To start today, the student completed addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators. This is a review of last week, but a skill that she needs to improve on when finding the common denominator. We will continue to work on this. For multiplying fractions, she did well after I did an example. Converting metric and US standard measurements was something I gave her the information for in order to solve the problems. We ended with word problems, which she completed on her own without assistance."
"Today I introduced how to find the volume of a sphere. The student picked up on this skill relatively quickly. The only minor change was making sure to cube the radius versus square it. Next, I backtracked to review converting fractions into decimals. We discussed terminating and repeating decimals. He took notes, writing down the steps. He was familiar with long division and appeared more confident after I reviewed the process with him. He needs to remember to utilize his notes that remind him when to add a decimal or zero or additional zeroes to the dividend."
"Today I met with the student at the library and we split this session in half to work on both math and reading. For math, we reviewed the first 2-3 weeks of his math workbook on Common Core standards for 4th grade math. For reading, we started his first book required for summer. I listened to him read Chapter 1 and helped him with the few words he didn't know or struggled with."
"Today our focus was on reading and writing. We had a great session. I had the student give me a writing sample and found out more about his writing tendencies. We did sixth grade level vocab work to improve his writing and reading comprehension."
"Today the boys worked on reading comprehension and math concepts. The first student is working on letter formation and staying on topic with his writing. The second student is working on higher-level math and beginning levels of multiplication."
