Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I went over section 1.5 in her textbook, which was a review for what we worked on this summer- vertical, supplementary, linear pairs, and complementary angles. This material came back to her immediately, and we went over her homework, and we completed the first half. I think she really needs to work on simplifying algebraic equations because there is a lot of algebra when trying to find angle measurements. I will try and give her some quick algebra review next session. Otherwise, she asks good questions, and if we build up her test stamina I think she can get A's on her exams!"
"Today was my first session with this student. We focused mostly on factoring quadratic equations using a technique that his teacher taught him. We worked together solving sample problems from the book, and he was eventually able master the technique. Throughout the session, I gave him tips on how to work with quadratic equations in general. By the end, he was doing very well with them. I will prepare some more material related to quadratic equations for next week."
"Today was our final review session for the student's logarithm test tomorrow. We focused on the more complex modeling problems for the first half of the session, then reviewed properties & graphing. I expect him to do well on his exam; he's shown remarkable improvement in his grasp of the material over the past few days."
"Today was our first day meeting and I think it went very well. The student and I started with a short view of lines rays, angles, and correct mathematical notation for each of these objects. She didn't have any trouble recalling those concepts. After this, I gave her an introduction to parallel and perpendicular lines followed by a few examples with pencil and paper. We also read through the Lesson 5 definitions which also included midpoints and angle bisectors. We did a few example problems which involved using these definitions to solve for a missing side length or angle measure. She seemed to pick it up no problem. We finished today's session with an introduction to complementary and supplementary angles with a few examples on paper. Overall, I felt the meeting was productive, and I will follow up with an algebra review/assessment for her to do between sessions."
"Today we applied the fact that vertical angles are congruent, that vertical angles are congruent, and that a linear pair is supplementary to find missing angles involving two parallel lines and the transversal. After finding which angles were congruent we used the provided information to form an equation and solve for an unknown variable. We also briefly discussed how geometry was different from other math classes and introduced the two column proof structure."
"Today we assessed what the student needs help with and how we can make a plan to meet those needs. She is a student who very much wants to do well and hasn't been receiving the support she needs in school from a new teacher. We practiced what she is working on now and tried to fill in some of the gaps in her knowledge."
