This is my first session with this student and I used it to get to know him and observe his learning style. We covered coordinate planes, plotting, and quadrants. He excelled on this topic and was eager to complete his work. He struggles with reading and reading comprehension. He will read things that interest him. During our session, we read one chapter of his book with both of us switching off. I noted that he pronounces words sounding out every letter but needs to work on identifying correct sounds with vowel/consonant/vowel patterns. There are a few teaching styles I would like to try to see how to make reading more enjoyable for him.

The student had homework on a lesson involving the concept of area of parallelograms. We started the session by reviewing the strategies and skills, including modeling examples. She had to first find the area of each given parallelogram. In the second section she had to draw and label parallelograms from given measurements, and then find the area of each. She worked independently, but struggled with problems in the first section. I guided her through the steps of using the formula for finding the area of a parallelogram. She was very responsive to the review and continued to complete the first section. She was also able to complete the rest of the problems assigned. Next she had a topic assessment packet based on inequalities. She had to determine values to make given inequalities true or false. She was able to complete this packet with little guidance.
