Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Pico Rivera, CA Physiology tutoring
Today, we covered everything on the student's study guide for his test about acids and bases tomorrow. Topics included the definition and properties of acids and bases, the names and formulas of common bases, and neutralization reactions. He struggled most with balancing chemical equations, but he remained focused and did not give up. To help him remember the properties of acids and bases, I suggested that he come up with mnemonic devices. To help him memorize the common acids and bases, I had him write out the name or formula while only looking at the respective formula/name. I gave him a worksheet to work on both during the session and afterwards in his own time. I suggested that he look over the material tomorrow morning before the test in case he forgets something between now and the test.

We discussed stoichiometry and some kinetics. We discussed many of the previous exam problems that the student had and then about 25 problems from outside. It was nice to see that she was regaining a lot of confidence (that she deserves) through crisscrossing the concepts by several problem solving, discussions where she had to explain things back to me, and discussions where she had to stand by her right conclusions against my counter-arguments.

We began by reviewing the material for the student's quiz retake tomorrow. She was able to do the problems without hesitation this time, and seemed much more confident. For the questions that require knowing definitions, she knew the material, but I encouraged her to review the teacher's wording right before the quiz to get as many points as possible. We then went through the rest of the final review packet fairly quickly to identify what was important to write on the sheet she will have during the test. We filled out most of the sheet and reviewed all of the important information, and she will finish this up on her own and will review it with classmates tomorrow before turning it in.

I focused this session on working through the free-response questions with the student in order to determine areas in which she needs some review before the AP test on Friday. Her biggest challenge was linking equipotential lines to electric fields, so I will discuss that in depth when we meet on Wednesday. I also will emphasize the relationship between electric force, electric field, and acceleration. Between now and the next session, she will work two more free-response problems on her own, so that she is more prepared to address questions completely independently.

We covered the difference between Bronsted acids and bases and Arrhenius acid and bases, pH scale, the difference between strong and weak acids and bases, how to solve for pH, how to solve neutralization equations, how to write net ionic equations, the definition of equilibrium, exothermic and endothermic processes, and Le Chatelier's principle. The student needed help with solving neutralization equations and Le Chatelier's principle because he did not really cover these topics in school, so we went over them in detail. He maintained a positive attitude during the session and was eager to learn. We went over the final exam review sheet in addition to some made up practice problems I gave him.

While this student is already an excellent student in chemistry, we reviewed concepts he had a few questions on. The concepts included thermochemistry, ideal gas laws, and briefly touched on solution chemistry. He is an extroverted learner and asked insightful questions regarding the topics we discussed. He will do well on his upcoming final exam.
