Session Summaries by Mandarin Chinese Tutors

Pico Rivera, CA Mandarin Chinese tutoring
We spent the first 45 minutes or so reviewing the student's homework for Monday, which involved some reading and short answers, in preparation for the short film they will watch in class. After she finished the homework, we continued reviewing for her final, focusing this time on the subjunctive in noun clauses. We did a basic overview in the textbook to review the formation and uses of the subjunctive, and then we did two sets of exercises in the textbook, and then did some online exercises. I could tell it was good for her to review this material, and she should be very solid in this area.

The student moved onto the next session in his Spanish book. I had him read a story in Spanish then translate it into English out loud. Then he put the events in order chronologically. His improvement in speaking and comprehension of Spanish is noticeable and it seems as if he actually enjoys it now! He also focused on the use of indirect object pronouns in his translations as that was the next grammar less in chapter six.

LESSON: 1) The student and I are going through the last few sections of his final study guide. I tested him on the vocabulary for the first 2 chapters. He did awesome and only missed a few words. 2) We worked on the 2 essays and completed 15 sentences for each essay. He wrote out all the sentences with hardly any mistakes. He used solid sentences and made the essays with details and great vocabulary. We finished both essays. 3) I tested the student on the rest of the vocabulary words from chapters 3 to 6. I asked him the meaning of these words in both English and Spanish. He did a great job! 4) We started reviewing the cultural section of the test. He has to know information for 4 Latin American countries. We worked on Argentina, and have 3 more countries left. We shall finish this country data in our next meeting. The student was trying hard and did a fabulous job on his essays and vocabulary. He has fantastic memorization skills and could recall the meaning of all of his words. We will meet up this week to continue working on his verbs and the cultural section.

The student and I reviewed our latest material. We then plunged into some difficult grammar having to do with two adverbial particles. He did so well I was amazed. By the end of the lesson, we had learned to say, "He walked over at a leisurely pace."

The student did well today; he read lesson 1 and 2. We reviewed speech and the family tree. He will keep practicing the tones, and then the next step is to use emotion in speech. We will work on some template so that in next year's speaking competition, he will be able to answer simple questions in Chinese.

The student is very cooperative and she has some general knowledge about Chinese. Today, we learned and reviewed numbers 1-10 and expressions about body organs. Her vocabulary is good, though she may forget some, after repeating, she could pick them up. I left her homework about writing down the numbers and body organs with Pinyin on top of them. I think next time, maybe by using some character writing examples, she could learn better character writing.
