Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Physiology Tutoring review by Terrence in Lynn, MA
For this session, we went over Hess's Law and Gibbs free energy. At first he was having a bit of difficulty keeping the concepts of enthalpy and entropy separate, so we spent a lot of time going over the different parts of the Gibbs free energy equation so that he would be able to recognize how changes would affect the spontaneity and other features of the reaction. The Hess's Law concepts originally were a little confusing for him but now he seems to be able to pick them up quick and recognize what he needs to do. We went a little ahead of his class, and I hope he can then follow in class and with homework until he has a greater grip on these concepts before they are fully tested by the teacher.

Physiology Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Lynn, MA
We continued reviewing diffraction and properties of light traveling in different mediums. We combined earlier concepts of waves and refraction to describe how light behaves when traveling through a thin film such as oil over water. We looked at how the reflections from the top of the film and the bottom of the film will either interfere constructively or deconstructively, depending on the thickness of the film and the index of refraction of the material underneath the film. We found that constructive interference between the reflections when the material below the film has a lower index of refraction means that the film needs to be some quarter multiple of the wavelength of light that is being reflected, since only the reflection from the top is undergoing a phase shift. We also reviewed critical angles of refraction for a particular material. Once we were able to relate the various equations for reflection to how a wave behaves, the student was feeling more comfortable describing a problem and setting up different cases in which to use the equations.

Physiology Tutoring review by Stephanie in Lynn, MA
The student wanted to start reviewing for her assessment exam, so we started doing a practice exam together so we could figure out what she needs to review, and what she knows well. We were not able to finish the exam during the session. We definitely need to review unicellular organisms like amoeba and paramecium, we also need to go over enzyme function, and human anatomy. We will continue this exam in one of our future sessions. While we were going over it I began to write a little study guide out for her with definitions of things she wasn't sure about, like biotic and abiotic factors, and chemo autotrophic versus photoautotroph. I will continue that study guide for her when we go over the rest of the exam.

Physiology Tutoring review by Rikke in Lynn, MA
We started with the introductory chapters on scientific methodology and chemical nomenclature, and have moved on to writing and balancing equations, stoichiometry, and the concept of limiting reagents, as well as the equations and calculations required for these types of problems. I was pleased to note that the student seemed to pick up the concepts fairly easily.

Physiology Tutoring review by Ted in Lynn, MA
The student has requested that we continue her tutoring sessions with Biology as her main priority. Our main goal was to go over the important concepts that will most definitely be covered on the exam while practicing as many questions as possible. We focused on DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis today because that is a general topic that will always be on any Biology exam. We decided to review the material in depth. This will more than adequately prepare her for the exam, while also giving her a glimpse of what to expect in the future.

Physiology Tutoring review by David in Lynn, MA
Today I met with the student for our first session. She is very nice and friendly to work with and I found it very easy to review her Physiology material with her. We reviewed many of her lecture notes in detail and broke down complex topics so that they can be easily understood and digested. I also shared some useful YouTube videos that have online lectures, notes and presentations on some of the same topics. Our next session is scheduled for this Sunday.
