Tutoring review by Sheena in Wilberforce, OH
The student has started state tests, so we focused on practicing for the ELA. We read several passages, did some multiple choice questions (all of which the student got correct) and she wrote several paragraphs. She did an excellent job with the paragraphs, which she shared that she doesn't like because they force her to go back to the story. However, she is very capable of writing passages with many details based on the story. I was very impressed by her work today.

Tutoring review by Ashley in Wilberforce, OH
My session with the student consisted of a timed speed drill, and games to help in the conceptualizing of addition, numerical values, and order of operations. The timed speed drill was a 3 minute quiz testing to see how many she could solve out of 50 problems. It seemed to benefit her because it centered her focus on the problems rather than having her guess because "more was at stake." After the 3 minutes, I went through the problems with her and had her focus on the ones she missed. She was frequently able to see her mistake and recognize what happens when she rushes to quickly to answer a problem. We played "Make Your Number" and "Go Fish." Each consisted of dice or cards and an element of chance to where she was given certain groups of numbers and was challenged to pair like ones together, but also break the numbers down into factors (8 is also 4 and 2 and 6). At the end of the session, I was able to see her take some of the counting strategies I gave her and apply them successfully when she was tempted to guess at the answer.

Tutoring review by Mycael in Wilberforce, OH
Today was our first session. Upon arrival I met with the student and her mom to discuss the areas they feel she needs a little assistance in. They want to ensure she does well on her upcoming finals and would like study skills tips/assistance. During this session I asked her to complete a study skills survey, so I could better assess the areas she needs to focus on. I went over some study tips with her and highlighted some suggestions on the handout I provided her with. Prior to end of the session we created a study schedule for her for over the weekend and Monday. She seemed confident that she would be able to maintain this schedule. I made sure to remind her to clear her study space of all distractions, such as a cell phone, social media, and the tv/radio. Overall, the session went well.

Tutoring review by Megan in Wilberforce, OH
Today, the student and I covered topics he is struggling with in preparation for his mathematics entrance exam. His goal is to score well enough to get into the college algebra level course for this coming semester. We focused on completing the square and the quadratic formula. His teacher, this summer, didn't cover the concepts in depth. After a basic review, he seemed to grasp the concepts quite well and left the session feeling confident. He will be taking a diagnostic test over the next couple days to see where he stands for the whole test. We will setting up another session, for early next week, in order to review any last concepts before his placement test next week.

Tutoring review by Ryan in Wilberforce, OH
Today we talked about solubility rules and acid base neutralization reactions. We talked about how there are two different ways to decide on the net ionic equation: either cross out everything that hasn't changed state, or cross out everything that isn't in the produced salt. We then reviewed how to balance equations, and then we spent some time talking about acids and bases. Importantly, covalent products, such as water, should be included in net ionic equations.

Tutoring review by Yusi in Wilberforce, OH
First, we reviewed both uppercase letters and lowercase letters in the alphabet. Then, we moved on to practice speaking several simple sentences used to introduce oneself. We practiced speaking the sentences word by word, and I explained the meaning of the sentence and every word. I picked several sounds among those words that are particularly difficult to pronounce for native Mandarin speakers and had the student practice more. I pointed out that the pronunciations of letters when they stand alone are mostly different from when they appear in a multi-letter word.
