Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Trenton, NJ Physics tutoring
The student did much better on his latest test. For this session, we started on her newest homework assignment which involved problems that combined dynamics and the Big 4 equations. She was doing an excellent job of not only identifying what the question was asking, but also setting up the problems and solving them correctly. After finishing the homework problems for the week, we finished her lab for the week. The student did an excellent job today.

The student seems to have a basic understanding of the concepts. We went over: work, energy, power, momentum, and impulse. She's a good student and I have no concerns from this session.

We spent the session on Newton's 2nd law problems: we started with all perpendicular/parallel forces with constant velocity then accelerated motion, then we looked at applied forces at angles. We also spent time on determining "weight" in an elevator, and tricks to remember all of the special angles. He is doing extremely well with these concepts.

We went over graphs of displacement, velocity, and acceleration and their relationships to one another. The student practiced problems where he had to gather information from one graph and create another graph. We also talked about our schedule. We have either 2 or 3 sessions left before his exam, so we will take one session to cover new material and use the final sessions to review what he has learned this semester.

We spent the session reviewing for his test tomorrow. His teacher is no longer allowing makeup tests and exempted the student from the last test, so his grade on this test will be important. We reviewed calculating tension and normal forces, and forces on inclined planes. We needed to once again review some trigonometry (SinCosTan-SohCahToa) that he has not had in math but is expected as a prerequisite for Honors Physics. Despite not having it before, the student exhibited a good working understanding of how to apply the trig to physics problems, and our practice helped him cement that. We also reviewed free-body diagrams and Newton's Laws of Motion.

We went over force problems involving tension and pulleys. She is very good at the math and also started getting the hang of how to set up free body diagram. She needs a little bit more practice with Fnet=ma to master this concept.
