Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Round Rock, TX Physics tutoring
Today the student and I went over material covering gravitation. We started by reviewing the concepts he had already gone over in class. He had several "a-ha" moments, so I think that going over the material he had already heard in class again but in a different language is helping him understand it better. We then moved on to reviewing some problems, two of which he was able to do with little assistance from me. The third one we worked on was quite tough, but we talked about the framework of the problem and I'm confident he will be able to finish it. I'm glad to hear that his grade has improved since we started working together and I think that continued sessions will help keep his grade up.

We went over the student's problem set due tomorrow. The questions included finding expectation values of canonical ensembles, shown in various forms including magnetic moment, sides of a die, etc. I stressed that all of these were statistically similar in an attempt to make the problems less daunting. He initially had trouble remembering basic canonical ensemble formulas and plugging in the necessary information, but this drastically improved over the course of the session. Continued one-on-one work should improve his overall performance in the class.

Today, the student had a homework assignment dealing with sound. We covered the difference between ultrasonic and infrasonic sound waves and uses for them, as well as loudness and intensity of sound. She had some trouble understanding the definitions, so we went over some examples of different types of sounds and classified them as ultrasonic, infrasonic, or sonic. We also talked about echoing and methods that could be used to avoid it.

We went over some problems/concepts in preparation for her test on Friday. Specifically we went over circuit reduction and Gauss' Law problems. We also discussed general concepts about field and potential. The student was able to make good progress on circuit reduction which seemed to be troubling her a bit. So far she seems to be doing quite well.

We went over her homework in optics. Topics covered were the thin lens equation, converging lenses, ray diagrams, mirrors, and magnification. She understood the material very well before our session, and I helped her understand a few subtle concepts. She definitely has a solid grasp on ray optics.
