Redmond, WA Physics tutoring
We went through a homework assignment covering the work it takes to move a test charge, calculating the charge of an object, and parallel plate capacitors. We got through most of the homework and I trust that the student can finish the rest on his own.

In this session, the student and I mainly focused on working through problems concerned with force mechanics, one of the more challenging topics so far in this portion of physics. Due to the volume, variety, and nuances of these problems, I emphasized the importance of setup and solving procedures to ensure that she gets in the habit of solving these problems step-by-step, analytically, avoiding the common mistake of jumping to conclusions. In upcoming sessions, we are going to be working through practice exam problems in preparation for her first exam next week.

We reviewed concepts in springs, Hooke's law, harmonic motion. We utilized the principles behind the motion of spring to write a python program that would simulate an object moving on the end of a vertical spring. We included variables that would affect the system such as spring constants, mass, amplitude of displacement and dampening coefficients.

I talked with the student in order to get a better understanding of how she felt she was doing in the class, what she needed to work on, and her general studying strategy. We then went over the test questions that she missed and I was able to help her through a few of her homework problems. We got stuck on two problems, which I plan to work through in time for the next session.

The student and I started by going over the homework he was working on. We went through the problems very thoroughly, covering the concepts underlying the problems, transferring this to equations and strategies for doing this. The problems covered rolling motion and pulley systems with mass having pulley. Finally, we went over the quiz which he said he was going to retake, covering potential energy functions and center of mass. The student was having a hard time figuring out where to start with the problems when we started, but once we got started he had no problems with the math. I'm confident that with some practice he'll get the hang of figuring out where to start with the problems.

This session we prepared for the student's upcoming test in physics. Along with the concepts covered last session, we covered Newton's second and third laws today. We completed the two review packets she was given in class. She has a good understanding of the concepts; all she needs to do to prepare is review some of the definitions.
