Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Rancho Cordova, CA Physics tutoring
I covered circular motion, angular speed, frequency, period, static friction, kinetic friction, and ramp. The student exhibited a very good attitude and great interest toward the subject. I included the approach on how to solve the problem. I suggested she practice solving practice problems and I will review them with her during next session.

We covered Electrostatics and Magnetism, going over some recent assignments in his class. The force from a magnetic field (F=qvBsin(theta)), the magnetic field that circles around a current carrying wire (B=(mu_0 I)/(4 pi d)), the force from an electric field (F=qE), the electric field between two parallel charged plates (Delta V = -Ed). He struggles mostly with relating the homework/test problems with the needed physical concept or equation. We went over some strategies for problem solving: looking at the units of the values given by the instructor to help to determine which equation is needed. Also, ensuring that the units work each answer, e.g., F=qvBsin(theta) will give answer in Newton's, so make sure to input values with units that will return Newton's. For tests, I recommend preparing a page of valuable equations and constants (such as charge of electron/proton) to allow quick access.

We covered vectors and projectile motion. The student was struggling a bit with both general concepts and specific examples, but was quite receptive and it seems like he understood after some additional explanations and working through examples. I gave him short explanations for the main concepts and we worked through several homework problems.
