Plainfield, NJ Physics tutoring
We started discussing some basic properties of fluids, including how to calculate hydrostatic pressure and hydrostatic force. Most of the subject matter was review from Calc 2 which, I think, provided for better understanding, but I think we will have to review this topic again. Calculating pressure was a little easier for the student.

We had our final review on the chapters dealing with electrostatics, with the guideline of the student's practice problems. The difficult part is again about being clear about the geometry of the problems, and clearly distinguishing the differences between field strength, electrostatic forces, potential, and potential difference. The summary equations that I gave her should be helpful for her to review, even for the finals.

The student is learning about work and power in class, so we looked at several examples problems involving these concepts. We talked about how work is equal to change in energy, and power is equal to work over time, and how to apply these ideas to problems. The biggest concept she needed help with was understanding what angle to use in the formula W = Fdcostheta, but once I explained how the angle is between the force and direction the object is moving, she felt confident doing those problems. We also looked at calculating power given the work and time, which she did not have trouble with.

The student had some trouble with some center of mass/center of gravity problems on a quiz so we focused on a couple problems that brought out these points, to watch for on his test. The key is to really know what forces are relevant to your question. He understands this in general. Some strange setups just needed another look.
