Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Montgomery County, PA Physics tutoring
The student had a physics lab to finish. They had to make a mini "roller coaster" and predict the speed at different points using the conservation of energy. From the predicted and measured velocities, they had to calculate the amount of friction and work due to friction. She completed the lab. We then did two worksheets on momentum, and she caught on quickly when I showed her the easier set of equations to work with.

The student and I covered work and energy during this session. We went over why and how force and distance need to be parallel components to calculate work. We explored the connection between work, potential, energy, and kinetic energy. Finally, we went over power and how it relates to these concepts.

During this session the student and I discussed material that will be on her upcoming exam. She did not have many issues working her way through the algebraic and arithmetic calculations. My suggestion was to budget some study energy to engaging with these concepts and building a physical intuition in addition to memorizing the equations. I will spend some time during our next session working on this.

The student and I reviewed centripetal force problems, Young's modulus, hanging mass problems, and how to solve physics problems using a step by step method. I left her with the task of reviewing the chapters in her book that she is covering in class and working through the examples problems using the step by step methods that we practiced. I also started creating a study guide with her during our session which she will work on further on her own. No concerns from this session.

We covered some practice problems and also went over his quiz for review. Also, we started some physics covering topics of electric force and electric field. We discussed the formulas and went over some questions relevant to the topics.

We went over questions from the classroom lectures on 1D kinematics and projectile motion that the student had uploaded. We agreed that the he gets the concepts and maybe needs more practice with problems. We did not set a date for a future meeting as he was able to get most of the concepts by himself.
