Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Lynn, MA Physics tutoring
We worked on both physics and mathematics since the student is expecting two tests in the coming week. The topics for physics is static electric charges, and the analysis for the forces. For mathematics, the topic was on multiplication and division of complex number in various ways. I explained to her in an intuitive way about how such problems could be solved, and the tricky part of it.

Lynn, MA Physics tutoring
During this session, the student and I took a look at old homework problems that she had missed on her first pass. We discussed a range of topics including one-dimensional kinematics, dynamics, static equilibrium, and rotational statics. She seemed to have a nice grasp on the underlying physics. This translates into correctly setting up the initial sets of equations. This is great as this is often a bit of a hurdle for many students.

Lynn, MA Physics tutoring
The student and I reviewed the physics homework that he completed the previous night. During our session, I could really see improvement being made. He is able to map out physics problems and arrive at the correct answer. Even if he makes a mistake, he is quick to see it and makes the necessary correction. We reviewed topics such as torque and conservation of rotational energy. He is able to translate linear equations to rotational equations with little trouble. We are working towards the goal of him being able to solve problems on exam and this can be accomplished by knowing which equation to know at the right time. I am very pleased with his progress thus far.

Lynn, MA Physics tutoring
We first went over radicals, which her math class just started. We did some problems on a worksheet she had and she understands them very well. I explained the concepts and rules and she was able to solve all of the problems without difficulty. Afterwards we went over vectors in physics. She had little difficulty understanding how to add vectors and find their different components.

Lynn, MA Physics tutoring
During our review session, we covered all of the remaining topics and principles that she may be tested on. We picked up from yesterday's session by going over some material on standing waves and traveling waves, including how to find the wavelength for a particular harmonic, calculating frequency, and determining the wave speed in a particular word problem. We then covered the definitions and formulas for finding the number of nodes and antinodes for any given harmonic before moving on to the topic of wave interference. We reviewed both constructive and destructive interference, which the student remembered very well, as we drew out diagrams describing what happens to the overall amplitude when two pulses meet, to display interference. The student asked fantastic questions to make sure she understood the material.
