In today's session, we worked on practice problems in 2D kinematics in preparation for the student's physics exam tomorrow. The hardest part of these problems and the biggest difficulty I saw with her is in starting each problem. In essence, they are all word problems which typically can be difficult, but I tried to give her a few techniques on how to break down the problems to make them less intimidating. Once she can break down a problem into the core components of what needs to be done, the physics part should be no problem for her.

Today we covered vector addition and breakdown of a vector into its x and y components. We then proceeded to solve vector problems such as acceleration of a skier on a slope, and acceleration of a brick on a slope connected by a string over a pulley to a hanging brick. Furthermore, we clarified the concepts of static and kinematic friction and did example problems involving these. The student is picking up on the missing concepts quickly and is getting well prepared for the upcoming test.

We worked on problems in precalculus and physics. The PreCalc problem was using a quadratic to find its critical points. The physics worksheets had problems about force, mass and acceleration. There was one kinematic problem. She showed good knowledge of math and physics, but had a little trouble with conceptualizing the problems and finding out what the question wanted to be answered. We will work on this in our next session.
