Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Carlsbad, CA Physics tutoring
The student was being introduced to problems about friction and inclined planes and tension. Once we got through the basics of how to define friction and insert it into problems involving Newton's 2nd law, he seemed to get the ideas pretty well. He will have plenty more problems to practice on.

We discussed a homework assignment that covered the topics of friction, work/energy, and power. One of the most useful things we discovered with energy/work problems is that gravitational potential, kinetic, and elastic energy are interchangeable due to the conservation of energy. We did a lot of converting one form into another. By the end of the session, the student was able to pretty much solve the energy problems on his own.

The student needed to review for an upcoming test. We went through a practice exam step by step to make sure that he understood the concepts behind each problem. He communicated to me that he felt his weakest area was in the application of the law of gravitation, so we did a few extra examples to practice this topic. At the end of the session, he felt confident that he could do well on the exam. He had a better grasp of how to do problems involving gravity.

We went over the upcoming homework of physics problems, covering a variety of projectile motion concepts (air to ground, ground to ground, and cliff to ground) to find time of flight, vector components of initial and final velocity, maximum height or distance dropped, etc. We highlighted the idea that with these problems, there can be up to 5 velocities to find for some of these problems: vxi (initial velocity in the x-direction), vxf (final ""), vyi, vyf, and vyp (velocity at the peak). The student continues to pick up on new concepts quickly, even when there are more than usual. She is staying on top of this class.

Today we calculated several examples on the topic of rotational motion, with emphasis on centripetal acceleration. Also, we did some problems involving forces in 2 dimensions, decomposition into components, and kinematic examples including vector addition. The student is getting well prepared for the exam that will take place sometime next week.
