Beaverton, OR Physics tutoring
We went through some pre calculus questions first. They covered inverse function and their domain. The student was able to do them by herself, and I explained some concepts on that. Then we went through some physics questions. They were about forces and diagrams as well as frictional force. I explained how to use the diagram and formula to solve each question. She understood them and was able to do them on her own. She is doing very well.

We went through the review sheets for the student's upcoming physics test on projectile motion. We reviewed vector addition for parallel vectors and perpendicular vectors. We reviewed the difference between a scalar and a vector, as well as examples of the two types of quantities. We reviewed the Pythagorean Theorem and the tip-to-tail method of adding vectors or finding the x- and y-components, as well as the rectangle method of adding perpendicular vectors. Lastly, we started a list of geometry vocabulary for him to turn into flashcards. We reviewed lines, segments, rays, planes, and various types of angles. I also left a sheet of intersected parallel lines as additional practice for calculating straight angles and vertical angles .

The student and I reviewed physics and algebra homework. In physics, we reviewed for an upcoming test, covering free fall distance and time, hang time, the speed of an object dropped from rest, uniform motion, and using the trigonometric ratios to solve for the components of vector quantities. In algebra, he worked on a review that covered increasing and decreasing and constant intervals of a function, maximums and minimums, domain, range, function algebra, composite functions, symmetry, odd and even functions, and transformations.

I had a very productive session with the student. We started off the session by discussing what types of problems and topics he was struggling with in his physics class. He showed me some examples of these types of word problems from the material he has covered in the class so far, and we went over the best way to approach the questions. I suggested writing out the equation and all the given information and drawing diagrams for each problem. We covered the concepts of displacement, velocity, acceleration, and projectile motion before moving on to the chapter on force. This chapter we covered in depth and went over many of his assigned homework problems. He was able to make notes for each question to help him in the future. I asked him to explain concepts and how he would approach each problem. He did an excellent job throughout the session and seemed more confident with the material by the end of the session.

Today we went over static equilibrium problems from past exams and homework. Problems included inclined rods hanging on strings, or rods attached to the hinges. Special care had to be placed to get the angles correct, both for the torque and for the force equations. The student is mastering the subject fully and just needed some refresher on the geometry aspects of the angles. He is getting prepared perfectly for the upcoming exam.

We focused on working with friction and the normal force during this session. Several problems were presented that incorporated building on past problems and topics (such as boxes on an incline) and new ones that focused on just using the normal force. The student continues to demonstrate excellent logical skills in setting up her problems and working through new, unfamiliar situations. She is especially good at keeping her positive/negative relations in mind.
