I have an excellent background in math, chemistry, and Chemical Engineering classes, having earned all A's and B's in these subjects. I also have a working fluency in Spanish and took Spanish 1-4 in high school.... First, ask the student what they are having trouble with. If they provide a general answer, I may ask to see one of their past homework assignments or tests to gain an idea of what the student might need help with. Then, we can start going through sample problems together, step-by-step. All along the way, I will ask the student what their train of thought is to answer the problem. This will help them understand how to break a problem down into manageable chunks that are easier to tackle. And it also boosts practice with critical thinking.
