According to an analysis done by the National Reading Panel, five methods - analogy, analytic, embedded, spelling, and synthetic - are used one after another to introduce phonics to children from kindergarten through sixth grade. This week I gave the student an informal quiz on the rhetorical devices that we've covered. He struggled and so I had him do a few more exercises with me (identifying rhetorical devices in JFK's Inauguration Speech, and in Marc Antony's "Brutus is an honorable man" speech in Julius Caesar). Afterwards, he seemed to understand them very well. I may have him do more of these anyway, because they got him to read and exposed him to a lot of new vocabulary.

The student and I focused more specifically today on his writing skills. I had him go through his ELA notebook and show me what they've been doing in class. First, we discussed the two books he's been reading, Flowers for Algernon and Quarterback One. I asked him what some of the themes of the books were, and, he does seem to be getting through the books with some level of interest. Next, we read a couple of his ELA free writing exercises, about a paragraph each. We discussed the concept of rewriting and put it into practice with these two writing exercises. Here, we focused on sentence variety and flow. A few grammar issues came up, which we discussed, and after working on structure and content, we proofread the essays. He did a good job picking out his errors. Lastly, I checked up on his organizational skills. We briefly discussed habit formation, and I looked through his binder and planner and saw that he's been keeping everything organized. I was pleased to see that he's been writing his deadlines on his calendar.

We started by doing the student's math inventory sheet she brought home from school. We talked about what was hard for her in math and what she really enjoyed. I am glad that we did this because I can use these things in future tutoring sessions. She then started her new paragraph writing for the week (brainstormed). This week she will be writing about her favorite subject in school. After she was done with that we read a short story and she answered some comprehension questions. We used that story to fill out her nightly reading log. This week's topic for her reading log is sequence of events. We ended the day by filling out a 100's chart. I had her do this, so that we can use it this week for skip counting and starting multiplication.

The student and I went over his spelling words then played a game of Scrabble with both his spelling words and other words. If there was a word either of us came up with that he couldn't pronounce or didn't know what it meant, he had to look the word up in the dictionary. We worked a bit on geography, as he was struggling to understand the instructions and words he was reading. We looked up how to say latitude and longitude, as well as equator and mapped about half of his work. The rest of the session was spent working more on his spelling words, which he had down by the end of the session.

The student and I spent most of our session focusing on a single answer that he had written for his Global assignment. The answer was acceptable, but I thought that it would be useful to workshop it for style, grammar, and argument strength. He should be treating any short answer assignments like he would short essay assignments--so, his answers should include topic sentences, evidence, definitions of key terms, etc. I hope that he can use his workshopped answer as a guide for the rest of the assignment. For our next session, he should finish both of his summer reading books and his Global assignment. I'm hoping that we can meet before he begins his first full week of school. If he hasn't turned in his Global assignment by then, we can review it one more time. And if he has, then we can take a look at any new assignments that he may have.
