We worked on organizing his 1st draft on his freedom essay. The student had all the main ideas of the topic but was unclear about how to organize his essay or writing topic sentences. I explained how to properly organize essays and we wrote the introduction and 1st body paragraphs together during the lesson. We ended the lesson by discussing how he would rewrite the next two body paragraphs and the conclusion. I'm looking forward to working with him this semester.

The student and I began our first session with some out loud reading. We worked on the months of the year, and I asked him to write out all 12 months, in order, for our next session. We also discussed the conversion of months into numbers for writing the date. I attempted to have him read out loud from his selected book, however it was soon apparent that the graphic novel he chose, although age appropriate in content, was beyond his reading level. Instead, I read selections from the graphic novel to him, having him help me with words and discussion pronunciation and vocabulary. We talked about graphic novels (comic books) and I have asked him to draw a six panel story for our next session, at which we will add text to together. He enjoyed being read to, and I hope I can continue his evaluation by using more level appropriate reading materials.

We went over how to solve problems that have variables on both sides of the equal sign. We also went over inequalities that have multiplication and division as well as multi step problems. We did a word problem at the end. I gave some tips on how to add and subtract non-round numbers. He knew all of the material thoroughly and how to math it out.

We focused on rounding out the rough edges of the speech and it really appears to be taking form. We finished and expanded upon the paragraph on techniques, adding real world applications that all audience members could relate to. We focused heavily on transitions between paragraphs, as well, and finished the first half of the conclusion. About half way through the lesson, I timed the student on the length of the speech and it came out on the far end of the time limit set down by her professor. So we continued to edit, making phrasing more precise and choosing words carefully and appropriately, shaving sentences down and removing redundancies. For about the last ten minutes I had her read some opening lines from Richard III to try and get her to enunciate specific words and punctuation, bring emotion into the speech, and draw the audience in with her words. More practice on this front is needed, so I will again be sending a follow-up email reminding her of these finer points and insisting she talk to herself/ recite lines as practice. I also left her to finish the introduction and conclusion as an assignment.

The student seems like a sweet, easygoing child. He was focused and attentive throughout the session. Tonight we did some editing passages. He shows strength in finding capitalization errors. We will work more on his knowledge of spelling, apostrophes, and commas. He was given a list of topics to write about, and he decided to write about why he's happy he's an older child. We used the "Hamburger" planning page to help get his main basic ideas down. Then he started writing his passage. I encouraged him to expand upon his details, and write about everything he was able to verbalize with me. For extra practice, I asked him to save his work that he completed tonight and work on his rough draft more before our next session by expanding on his details and building three more paragraphs.
