Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Andrew in Waltham, MA
At today's session, the student and I began our discussions of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. We began by focusing on who Laurie Halse Anderson is, what books she's written, and what kinds of issues inform her writing. We discussed the title of the work and the role of silence. We then analyzed the first 20 pages of the book, focusing on the point of view of the main character, her experiences during the first day of school, and difficult passages and vocabulary. I have asked him begin keeping a list of new vocabulary words, which we will review at upcoming sessions. For our next session, I have also asked him to write a summary of the most important relationships in the character's life and how she communications within those relationships.

During our session we primarily focused on studying for the student's English test. Since half of the test will be on material that he and I have not gone over yet we focused on those stories. We then worked on his vocab for the quiz. The student needs to move around and do things with his hands as we are working, which is fine because it actually helps keep him focused and on topic. He has a very active mind that needs to constantly be doing things but he is still able to answer questions and provide good analysis.

Phonics Tutoring review by Brian in Waltham, MA
Today was my first session with the student. After discussing where he is in his literature and history courses, and what his academic goals are, we split our time evenly between "Macbeth" and European history. Regarding "Macbeth" we discussed the imagery of blood, the themes of ambition, and the context of the Shakespearean audience. I recommended several productions of the play that he might watch. The remainder of our time was spent creating a flow chart of 17th and 18th century French governments spanning from the end of the Old Regime, through the First Republic, ending with the First French Empire. This will provide him a framework for his own studying.

Phonics Tutoring review by Grace in Waltham, MA
The student and I discussed the topic for her final paper. She decided to write about 100 Years of Solitude. She has previously studied the work in her high school, and so she had a few ideas about what she might want to focus on. As we began our session it appeared that those areas might not be the most fruitful, so we spent time researching to determine the best area of focus. The student has become much better at articulating her unique ideas and identifying the ways in which they diverge from what she has previously learned or read.

Student and I practiced sight words and short "i" sound. We also practiced "chunking" and sounding out unknown words. I am seeing progress.

Phonics Tutoring review by Traci in Waltham, MA
We used the session to read and develop the student's skills. We read some "lost" works by Dr. Seuss and a Henry and Mudge book. He was able to sound out most words in the Henry and Mudge book, and he made connections to his own life very well. He finished rhymes with the Dr. Seuss story, and he laughed at the humor and pictures. We worked on reading with feeling and using the punctuation to help make sense of the story.
