Tutoring review by Brendan in Taylor, TX
The student and I spent this session going over a unit test on quadratics that he just got back. He got a B- on the test, which was a great success. We identified a few errors that he made on the test that were just from rushing, things like mixed up signs and forgetting to completely distribute products. He would have potentially been in the A range for this test had he not made those errors, which is encouraging. He still needed help somewhat with completing squares, but only with more advanced forms of it, cases where the leading coefficient isn't 1. We discussed this in a little more depth. He may benefit from a bit more practice completing the square. We reviewed a few graphing problems. I saw this as a good opportunity to reinforce the function concept for him. I emphasized that algebra often boils down to being able to solve equations for different letters, whether they're constants or variables, and that often involves knowing the values of other constants and variables in the equation. I then explained how this relates to the concept of a function - how, given our argument/ input value, an equation/ formula allows us to solve for the value of the function. Graphically, this means that the graph of a function is the set of points (x,y) where y = f(x). For extra practice, I asked him to redo the problems where he lost some points on his most recent test, working slowly to catch mistakes, and noting what concepts he still doesn't quite have mastered.

Tutoring review by Joseph in Taylor, TX
We went over a test review set of questions dealing with surface areas and volumes for a variety of geometries, including cylinders, spheres, cones, trapezoids, pyramids, and other more complex shapes (e.g. an octagonal pyramid). These problems were mostly complex and required a full sheet of paper to solve in some cases. She was able to achieve the correct answers most of the time even for the complex problems. Occasionally, algebraic steps throw her off, but overall her problem solving ability is good.

Tutoring review by Shefali in Taylor, TX
At the beginning of our session, the student was very excited to tell me she received a 100% on her quiz covering Sections 8.1-8.3. During our session, we reviewed Section 8.4 on Graphing and Writing Equations of Ellipses. She had already completed her homework, but wanted to complete additional problems from her textbook. I also wrote out problems, using an old version of the Algebra 2 book, for her to practice and develop further understanding of concepts from Sections 8.1-8.4. She did a great job working independently on these problems. Upon completion, we reviewed her work together and looked at minor mistakes. At the end of our session, we looked over Section 8.5 on Graphing and Writing Equations of Hyperbolas and she practiced a problem from the textbook. For our session, we plan to review Sections 8.5 (further) and Section 8.6 to prepare for a possible quiz.

This evening, the student and I covered solving mixed equations and inequalities. She did well with this assignment. There were some minor errors. She is responsible for re-examining the questions that she got incorrect to see if she can determine what the issue was. If not, we will go over them next time (SB #27 problems 26, 27, 33, 36, 37, 44, 47, 50, and 52). She is also supposed to finish problems 53-60. She and I also talked about what math course she will be taking next year so that we can get an idea of what topics we should practice over the summer.

Tutoring review by Renato in Taylor, TX
Today we worked with a new school material regarding isometric transformations, namely translation, rotation and reflection. We reviewed her homework and did additional practice covering the transformations and its respective rules. At the end we reviewed one geometric construction using a compass and a ruler. She told me that today was a very productive day. I checked her understanding and it was good. Overall the wins from this session is that the student had a better understanding of isometric transformations and she is ready for the next topic.
