How can Phonics tutoring help you?

Phonics is a strategy used in elementary schools to teach children how to read. Phonics is traditionally taught early on in elementary school, though it is often used in conjunction with other strategies. With phonics, your child learns about letters and their sounds, as well as the relationship between them, allowing him or her to learn to spell the words. Your child may spend his or her time sounding out the words and phrases of his or her English class as he or she practices to understand the written form of language. The English language may be a struggle to grasp, given its complexities. If your child is having trouble learning to read English, Varsity Tutors' educational directors may help you connect with an independent phonics tutor in Seattle, Washington.

The educational directors at Varsity Tutors are prepared to assist you in identifying a tutor for your child. They begin by creating a student profile that details your child's various personality aspects. The director may consider his or her learning style, current understanding of phonics, study habits, and more. With this, they may connect you with an excellent phonics tutor in Seattle to begin helping your child understand the written form of English.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Gita in Seattle, WA
We spent the first half of the session reviewing the homework, a worksheet that had them identify the pronoun in sample sentences and identify it as either a subject or object pronoun. I also had them list the appropriate pronoun(s) to substitute for names given in the sample sentences. We spent the rest of the session reviewing nouns in anticipation of beginning lessons on verbs in the next 1-2 weeks. We went over common & proper nouns and singular & plural nouns. I had the boys look up the relevant information in their notes and 'teach' the subject to me.

I met the student and her parents. I heard a little about the students educational history and what her parents are hoping for her to get out of tutoring. I then introduced the student and her father to the collaborative project management tool I use to keep in touch in between sessions and monitor progress. Finally the student and I began working on the outline for her essay.

Phonics Tutoring review by Jessica in Seattle, WA
The student and I read a religious passage and created study questions based on it for a homework assignment. We also spent time practicing vocabulary words for his test next Friday; we used note cards and completed exercises in his exam vocabulary book. He did really well with the vocabulary: we went over the words a few times, and he was able to create sentences successfully with his new comprehension of the words. He was attentive and very engaged throughout the session. In the future, we will invest more time in his organization, as well as in his homework assignments.

Phonics Tutoring review by Brian in Seattle, WA
Today the student and I worked on the literature component of her language arts class. She has been continuing to work on the journal for her biography book report. We spent our time reviewing questions about an excerpt from Amy Tan's 'The Joy Luck Club.' The questions were critical reading in nature so they definitely challenged her to think about how and why characters behaved in a story, rather than simply recalling events as they happened. We spent some time freely discussing the story just to make sure she understood it properly as well.

Phonics Tutoring review by Danielle in Seattle, WA
The student and I successfully brainstormed according to this week's assignment instructions. We went over four stories and discussed the pertinent themes and aspects that would contribute to writing a good essay. We thoroughly analyzed the texts and the major literary components one would do when sitting down to write a thoughtful essay. Then, after that, we reviewed for her History exam on Tuesday.

Phonics Tutoring review by Patrick in Seattle, WA
Reviewed two paragraphs client had previously written for English paper on character archetypes in the stories. Reviewed grammar (correct run-on sentences, capitalizing proper nouns), and mentioned these points of review to the client and the parent. Also helped client to develop a thesis statement for the paper, to identify characters fitting the archetypes, and to find quotations in the book to reinforce argument. Helped client write about 600 words for paper.
