I started the session by making up word problems to get a feel for how the student was doing with math. He did really well with addition-based word problems (better than other 2nd graders I work with at adding sums in his head). He had a little more trouble subtracting numbers in his head, though he did really well when we "drew the problem out" on paper. He also had a little trouble telling if he should be doing addition or subtraction based on a word problem. For our next session, I will bring a couple of sheets of word problems so we can work on these skills. We read a bit of a book off the library shelf, and the student did well reading and comprehending. Then we spent the last half hour working on a stack of vocabulary/comprehension words. He didn't know what some of the words meant, so we took the time to talk about what each one meant and have him answer questions to show he understood the meaning of each (Ex: "Would you rather eat lunch on the shore or in the river?" and "Is your bed indoors?") We were able to go through each word twice, and he remembered the definitions the second time through. Overall, I think this session went pretty well, especially for a first meeting, since we were still getting to know each other, and I was feeling out how the student learns best. I look forward to our meeting next Saturday!

Today I helped the student with her math homework, which consisted of measuring objects and comparing object measurements. After that, I had the student complete a word sort activity where she had to organize the endings to different words into three columns. Lastly, I had her work on a reading comprehension activity that consisted of her reading a short passage and then answering comprehension questions about the passage. She did a great job with decoding new words. She seemed interested with everything we worked on today.

Met with the student today from 2:30 - 3:30. He took an assessment, reading a non-fiction passage about ducks on a computer program. I assisted him with unfamiliar words, but overall, he did a good job reading and self-correcting. After reading the passage, he had to fill out a graphic organizer indicating the main idea and then putting in supporting details. He did a nice job remembering some details. After completing the graphic organizer, he took the test associated with the duck story and got 3/5 correct.
