Tutoring review by Brendan in Monaca, PA
The student has a cumulative final this Thursday, so we went over some topics from earlier in the term. We worked with the point-slope, slope-intercept, and standard forms of equations for lines. We focused on how to convert between the three forms, and how to interpret them graphically. We also looked at the concept of a function. We talked about how, given a value x, and a formula y=f(x), we can find the value of y. We also talked about the relationship between a function and the graph of a function, i.e. if f(x) = y then every x value will correspond to a point (x,y) on the graph of the function. We finished the lesson by discussing general test prep and test-taking skills.

My second session with the student went well. We went over the material we had covered last session (properties of polyhedrons, calculating area, surface area of polygons and polyhedrons). We also went over a take home quiz that he had done well on - we went through the questions that he answered incorrectly (which involved surface area of polyhedrons and multiplying fractions). He asked that I help him with his homework assignment which had some geometry questions (similar to the material we had been covering) and some questions seemingly taken from practice tests. As one question asked him to calculate the volume of a polyhedron, we discussed what volume was, how to calculate it, the differences between volume and area and surface area, etc. We also went over converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa as that was a topic that came up while working on his homework. I left him with several practice problems focusing on multiplying fractions. He said that he found fractions difficult, so I asked him to give the problems a try so we could discuss them at our next session. All in all, a good session.

This was my first meeting with the student. We built rapport by discussing his school, pets, and family members. I provided him a primary spelling inventory test to determine his strengths and weaknesses in phonics. After assessing him, I spoke with his father about the results. He and I did a CVC activity in which he had to identify the ending sounds of each word. He and I also completed a rhyming activity to determine his ability to rhyme. His father was provided a website to use for helping him with phonics practice. He was well mannered and gave great effort.

Tutoring review by Robert in Monaca, PA
The student and I went over a test review in her book on Chapter 4. She did very well when going over the concepts in this chapter. Her weakness with this math material would be function notation. I explained to her that function notation is replacing y with f(x). I also taught her that graphing a function notation problem is treated the same way as a problem in y=mx+b form. To further expand her knowledge of why we have function notation, I explained that the function f at a specific x value is the y value. At the end of our review on the Chapter 4 test, I recommended she to try the standardized test version in the book as well as review each section to look out for material not covered in the Chapter 4 test review page.

The student and I worked on DeMoivre's Theorem and reviewed conversions from rectangular to polar coordinates. He struggled a bit in the beginning, but he now has become a lot stronger with the topics at hand. We have another session on Wednesday.
