Today I taught the student how to identify conjunctions, prepositions, articles, and indirect objects. He did very well and remembered our previous parts-of-speech lessons without a problem. Afterwards, I gave him a reading comprehension practice and then we worked on spelling. Finally, I reviewed his vocab cards with him and discussed how to properly use them in a sentence.

I introduced a new vocabulary list to the student today; he has graduated to a new grade level with this! I purposefully left out the parts of speech for each word, and asked him to identify these. We discussed questions to ask oneself when determining parts of speech, such as "Does the word describe how something is done or where or when it is done? If 'yes,' then it's an adverb." The student got about 60% of these correct. He is still challenged by differentiating between verbs and adverbs, as well as adjectives and adverbs. In preparation for a punctuation board game, he and I discussed the main types of punctuation and when and for what purpose they are used. Judging from the little that I've seen of his writing, he has a rudimentary understanding of punctuation such as colons, semicolons, quotations, etc. So I am making this topic a priority for the next few sessions.

For this session, the student and I began the unit pertaining to Indian folk literature. We spent the majority of the session working on an activity that familiarized her with a few myths and ideologies of Indian folk culture. She greatly enjoyed reading about the origins of karma, dharma, and reincarnation. After we finished the introductory section, she completed the quiz for the section. At the end of the session, I reminded her to remain diligent and continue working on the English units covering Romeo and Juliet.

1) 1:00-1:45 - Began session finishing English, Lesson 18 - speech in essay format. The student walked me through the process of completing the remaining 3 paragraphs. She did a great job. 2) 1:45-2:30 - Lesson 19 began with the Robert Frost poem, "The Road Not Take." We discussed what make a poem a poem; how it works through images, both visual and sensory. She was quick to get to the deeper meaning/metaphor of the poem. We moved on to read about types of poetry and figures of speech. Then we read two poems and answered all but one of the questions that followed. The remaining questions are a chart, and we will finish Friday. 3) Homework: She will "make something" and get the book and encyclopedia entry necessary for the remaining two SS lessons. We are almost caught up!

We started with computer sentence completion and the student did very well. We defined the word 'appear' because she asked what it meant in the sentence. She did much better with comprehension with this story. Then she picked a book for the read aloud and she did wonderfully with the reading and re-telling. We defined the word royal. Then we focused on a short story and six comprehension questions. She did well with this.
