Today we focused on verb conjugations, specifically the present simple tense. We looked at regular verbs where the third person conjugations changed depending on the ending of the verb. We reviewed the alphabet sounds, words that the student has been practicing, and covered correct punctuation and pronunciation. The student left with homework on verb conjugations.

Today the student and I began with a quick review of last week's material. We reviewed personality vocabulary, work experience terms, and relative clauses. He has the most trouble expanding his replies to questions. I believe this is because he does not feel comfortable enough with his vocabulary to answer them. If he really wants to improve his English, he is going to have to begin studying at home more. After our review today, we discussed ways to describe people including age, adjectives of appearance, and hair color and style description. We did a description of what's going on in the photo activity to expand his vocabulary and get him thinking about the story behind the picture. We described celebrities to practice our vocabulary, and made guesses about their personalities. I asked him to review the vocabulary we studied, and we will continue with adjectives of appearance on Wednesday.

The student and I focused on reading and conversation. We talked about his weekend and his thoughts on current affairs. I would suggest ways for him to rearrange his words into full sentences. Next time, we are going to re-visit intonation and read about the Revolutionary War.

Once again, we went over some common words and phrases used in airports/customs. We reviewed her homework from last week; she's beginning to understand how to form questions in English using "Do...?" and "Are...?". We worked on forming sentences using to see, to like, and to live. I left her with a list of suggestions for how she can keep up with English while on vacation. We will leave voice messages for each other in English on the app and I suggested that while she travel, she take her index cards with her and listen to music in English. I'll also be sending her some things to work on.

Today we did a lot more work with future and past perfect tenses. The student told me several stories using these tenses. I think she did very well with the tenses and expect great progress from her to come. She also managed to use several of the idioms I had taught her yesterday in conversation. I taught her a few more that came up in natural conversation (ex. get along with, etc.) and she seemed to grasp those. For next week, I have asked her to do a few things: first, to write a story using one of our perfect tenses, and then to make notes for (but not write!) a second story that she will tell me in class. I also asked her to try to use her new idioms in conversation this week. She was very excited about doing this, and, as always, is incredibly positive about the whole experience. She told me she feels more confident in her English, and I can see she has made improvements in word choice and sentence structure.
