How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?
As your child nears the end of their high school career, they may be starting to think about college options. Along with college preparation, comes the PSAT. While this exam is used as preparation for the SAT, it is also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). This means that if your child does well on this exam, not only is that a confidence booster for the SAT, but it can also qualify them for a scholarship. Should your child perform well on the PSAT (within the top five percent in the state), they may qualify as a Commended Scholar. This is an achievement highly recognized by universities and may result in a scholarship for your student. There is also a PSAT 8/9 and a PSAT 10 that are used to track younger students' progress. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with an experienced PSAT tutor in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who can work around your family's busy life and help your child study for any version of this exam. The tutor can even work with your student online.
Philadelphia PSAT tutors can help your child adeptly prepare for the exam. They can offer your student practice exams to help hone in on the areas that they really need to spend the most time working with. Once they have found the area or areas that your child needs to work on, they can develop a customized study plan made just for your student. The exam has three sections – an evidence-based reading section, a writing section, and a math section. The evidence-based reading section is timed for 60 minutes; the writing section is timed for 35 minutes, and the math section is timed for 25 minutes without a calculator and 45 minutes with a calculator (70 minutes total for the entire section). Your child's tutor can practice timing each section for your student as they take the practice exam. This will give them a chance to see what it will be like on test day. They can then cover any areas they missed on their practice test with their tutor, receiving explanations for wrong answer choices. For the writing section, this offers an added benefit, as there are no answer keys for this section. Their tutor can provide them with immediate feedback and tips for their essay.
