I ended up talking at the student for most of today. She has a test on Monday, so I wanted to run through everything we didn't cover as quickly as possible. I hope it helped. She said it did and I gave her homework to do practice problems since we didn't get to that today.

During this session, the student and I worked through the short answer questions on the practice AP exam. We took time to discuss the ins and outs of her responses, as well as considering alternative ideas. We also spent time working on a long essay response that dealt with mid- to late-twentieth century domestic movements and foreign affairs. We constructed a chart to help to form a useful thesis. As we near the exam, we have decided that the student should get as much essay-planning practice in as possible.

Today, we solely focused on AP US History prep. We reviewed two multiple-choice tests that the student did during the past week. On the first exam, he received a 69% on the multiple choice, but on the second, he went up to an 85%! He said that simply taking these tests helped him feel more comfortable and review the material. We also reviewed test-taking strategies for the multiple choice, short answers, DBQs, and essays. We discussed specifically how he would implement these strategies into his next week of review and on the test. We developed a plan for his last week of prep before his exam. He is hopeful that he will be able to receive a score of a 5 on his test based on his current scores. We are excited to see how he performs on the exam.

In the beginning, we went over the AP exam format and talked about ways the student could improve his answers. I encouraged him to use historical context in his analysis. A clear thesis statement and cohesive writing are key. I suggested he spend more time planning out his answers when writing a large amount of information quickly. After this, we talked about the Populist Movement and the Progressive Era. We also went over the Korean and Vietnam Wars. I think the student should do well on his AP exam.

The student and I analyzed a DBQ that she wrote before our meeting. I went through the DBQ and had her practice rewriting her thesis and rephrase her paragraphs to help to maintain an argumentative thread throughout the DBQ. We also talked about some test taking strategies: taking a deep breath to ward off nerves, brainstorming outside information and context, and sketching out a brief outline. I also reminded her how great she is going to do on the exam on Friday!

We covered the sections of the test he felt weakest in: foreign policy doctrines, international interventions, and state vs. federal rights. He felt good about most things, but he was nervous about writing his long essay tomorrow. I helped him with blending historical concepts together into larger cause and effect structures: the big picture. Hopefully historical date anchors will help guide his essay if he feels lost. I left him with a few links to doctrine review and quizzes on 20th century information.
