The student's sixth module focuses on chi-squared tests of two-way (contingency) tables. These tables compare categorical data and ask whether the categories examined are causally independent or not. The student's discussion question this week asked about scatter-plots, so I covered the basics on what scatter-plots look like, how they function and how they represent the frequency distributions in two-way tables. We discussed calculating the test statistic for rejecting the null hypothesis in comparison cases like drug trials and political polls.

The student is a very enthusiastic student. We talked for the first 10 minutes about his experience with the GRE so far and what his take-aways had been from studying prep books over the summer. For five minutes, we looked briefly at his diagnostic test report, so he is familiar with those features. For the next hour, we worked on math problems from his diagnostic test. For the last 45 minutes, we looked at two passages from the test prep GRE Verbal Reasoning practice. We discussed several types of distractors ("implies" and "suggests;" answers that over-reach or make false comparisons; answers that are opposite; and answers that are true, but don't answer the question).
