The student and I covered stock valuation in great detail; namely the Gordon growth model or constant growth model. We discussed the varying ways you can tackle the problem and algebra needed to solve them. His teacher asked in different ways to get to the same solutions. Sometimes that was what the price was or the required rate of return, but giving different information to achieve these results. I would recommend looking for clues in the question, for example "we just paid a dividend of 1" is not "our next dividend is going to be 1." Also make sure there is growth on dividends and it isn't flatlined or negative.
