Petaluma, CA Writing tutoring
We worked again on her research paper. All of the session we went through what she had written for the long-term effects of a historical event. Now we only have one small paragraph left, the conclusion, references and edits. We are going to meet again on Tuesday, and she is going to try and have the last paragraph complete for us to look over. Then we can complete the conclusion, and begin editing and adding in the references. She is feeling confident about the paper, although she is concerned about the grading because it is worth so much of her grade.

The student and I have begun setting up a routine for test prep. Today, we worked on a method by which to work over passages that saves time and doesn't mentally exhaust her by the middle of the test. The goal is to understand that AP exams are also standardized exams that don't require her to stress over memorizing large amounts of information, but rather applying integral concepts to different scenarios. We talked about smart test taking skills like: a system to track main ideas of each paragraph with only a few words, NEVER reading answer choices first, but making sure to ALWAYS skim the questions before starting a passage. We went over recognizing key words, prioritizing passages based on their levels of difficulty and began to touch on things like root words. Though she isn't particularly struggling with the subject itself, she is worried about taking her first AP Exam ever and making sure she's adequately prepared for it. For practice, we decided it would be best for her to do exercises where she practiced each skill we went through on two passages at a time, separately--she has 8 passages assigned for the week. She's a very bright and motivated student. She is very engaged and really does well with one-on-one. She's a literature buff of sorts, so we had a great time discussing the impact of certain strong scenes in Tolstoy's War and Peace, as well as her current reading (Middlemarch for pleasure and Grapes of Wrath for class). It was a successful first session and our next one will be the week after next.

The student and I practiced writing rhetorical analysis essays, as well as answering sample multiple choice questions that are in the AP style. I left her with instructions to buy an AP prep book.

Student A and I worked on our reading today. We went over the story of King Midas in a book I had brought, working through it slowly, asking ourselves a lot of questions as we read. This kind of active approach was a chance to practice observing the features of a story in real time. She seemed enthusiastic and took to it well. As homework, I asked her to do the same thing for herself, this time with the story of Icarus. Student B and I did a similar practice together. He did a good job of practicing with me. We worked on sounding out words and deciphering their meanings. For homework, I asked him to continue reading every night, and to write brief summaries of his reading each time, to keep him engaged.

The student and I went over homework I assigned for him. We then went over the writing assignment he did for school. I began a new persuasive essay with him. He selected a persuasive writing prompt and I helped him brainstorm reasons, then I helped him create an outline. For homework, he will correct the wrong answers on his vocabulary homework from last week, and will also write the introduction and first two body paragraphs of the new essay.

This was an additional session to meet an approaching deadline. We worked on a couple of speeches the student needs to give at an event in June. We looked at the difference between written and spoken language, seeking to find a tone that would be suitable both to the student's voice and the occasion.
