Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Petaluma, CA Physics tutoring
We started working on the student's new material for the week by reviewing her homework for physics. For this week, she was working on momentum and impulse. Her homework problems covered basic impulse problems as well as more complicated ones that explored the relationship between impulse, force, and acceleration. She did really well with this material, and she has continued to improve on her ability to set up problems on her own. We also reviewed her geometry homework and practiced simplifying square roots.

We worked on impulse and momentum today. The student did very well with these topics - I emphasized the importance of direction of the velocity when doing these. She was also able to do two-dimensional momentum problems very well. We also did some problems involving law of sines and law of cosines. She occasionally misinterpreted the word problems, but overall really knows how to use these two formulas.

The student and I covered in detail potential energy, kinetic energy, and the conservation of energy. Further, we discussed the concept of having maximum potential and maximum kinetic energy. We also covered vectors and how to draw them and determine the angles they make on a coordinate system. We then did practice questions to hone in on our problem solving skills. Finally, I assigned the student practice questions from her practice book to help with her exam.

The student and I had a good session. She has a test this week on magnetism and using the different right-hand rules in order to solve different situations. We went over a whole homework assignment together. These questions ranged in difficulty, and by the end, I believe she had a better handle on the material.

The student and I prepped for his mid-quarter exam tomorrow. We covered a variety of topics: friction, uniform circular motion, and gravitation. He seems strong on uniform circular motion, though sometimes he needs guidance on where to go when more than one equation is necessary to solve a problem. We will meet again this week to get him a head start on the next topics (which I believe are momentum and energy conservation).

The student and I reviewed for his exam today, and went over the material covered in physics this semester. We looked at complex problems that combined concepts between multiple units and how to break apart these problems in a piecemeal fashion. Topics covered included forces and kinematics, forces and torque, energy and momentum, and thermodynamics.
