Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

Petaluma, CA ISEE tutoring
Today, the student I continued working on his essay writing through a variety of activities. I introduced him to outlining as a way to plan an essay and we spent some time better developing his essay using an outline to organize the main and supporting details. He also developed an idea for how to begin the essay and how to conclude it and he is going to write the essay for out next session tomorrow. Next, he and I added to his set of examples that can be used in introductory/concluding paragraphs. We had previously explored some historical examples and this time came up with some examples from books that he is familiar with - The Odyssey, The Bible, and the Aeneid. We also added the example of the underground railroad to his historical examples. Finally, we looked at some essay prompts and explored what historical and literary examples could be used to introduce an essay about each of these different prompts. The last part of our session focused on vocabulary. We created different bags to use to organize vocabulary note-cards into those words that he knows and those which he needs to practice more. We reviewed the cards he has already created and he was able to categorize three of them as words that he knows well while the others went into the bag for further review. Tomorrow we will begin work on reading comprehension and in preparation for this he is going to read two introductory pages from his independent school entrance exam test prep book about the reading comprehension section.

The student and I started by quizzing vocabulary using the cards he made. We spent about 30 minutes on this. He is good with recognizing the meaning given context, but needs a bit more work with memorization. We moved on to math, using some of the online materials to work on quantitative reasoning. Again, some concepts are strong, some the student has yet to see. He did a practice test, then one together, then went over concepts he did not understand. We will continue to work incrementally on math until he has a general idea of how to solve algebraic equations.

In this session, we were able to finish the full length test review that we had been working on for the previous few sessions. The student appears to still struggle with reading comprehension overall. He seemed engaged and interested in the material during the meeting, so I believe that the session was productive. Now that we are getting closer to test day, I made an effort to stress testing strategies like identifying obviously incorrect answer choices in more difficult problems. I believe that working on this increased the speed at which the student could move through the questions. For extra practice, I stressed continually working on reading skills by doing online exercises. Based on his performance on today's questions, I think the student has gained the largest amount of improvement in verbal reasoning. Thanks.
