Petaluma, CA Geometry tutoring
The student was continuing to work on complex numbers and has a quiz coming up so we did our best to prepare for that. She had a worksheet that had a good selection of problems so we worked through that. We covered operations on complex numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), complex conjugates, and somewhat more complicated algebra based problems involving complex numbers. This included using 'foil' and the distributive property. The student had a lot of questions at first, but we were quickly able to answer those and set her on the right path. I also created some additional problems on my own that covered the same basic material. I reminded the student to try to stay organized and told her that she really should practice the problems that we went over to make sure she was confident enough to avoid mistakes. If she does a bit of studying and hammers down the ways to solve the problems (doesn't mess up her negative signs or distributing) she should do very well.

I worked with the students at the same time on a homework assignment that was graded on accuracy, so they wanted to make sure they got the answers correct. The questions involved graphing some points and finding the distance between them (distance formula) or given a point and a distance and asked to find the second point on the line, or given a point and the midpoint of a line to fine the other endpoint and the length of the line. Finally, there was one question that graphed a square and they had to find the perimeter and area of the square and the square made up of the midpoints (since the square was made on straight lines, we counted the length and then used the Pythagorean theorem to find the length of the midpoint square). Afterwards, we discussed their other math assignment which consisted of parallel and perpendicular lines and using/solving for slopes to make these conclusions.

We prepared for a quiz that she has tomorrow covering trapezoids and kites. There were a variety of rules and formulas she had to learn. As we progressed she seemed to more and more naturally know the rules herself. We worked to summarize the rules at the end of our session. This was the first time we covered this material and she has a quiz on it tomorrow. She decided that she wants to meet twice a week and these times were established for now. She is a very willing student and a steadfast, focused learner.

Monday was the student's 20th geometry tutoring session. It was very successful. We practiced solving problems involving finding the surface area of pyramids. These included triangular, rectangular, pentagonal, and other pyramids. Some bases required using trigonometry to find the apothem in order to find the area of the base. He also practiced his algebra skills when asked to find the base or the height given the surface area of a pyramid. Composite figures were also part of the assignment, and he did very well calculating these surface areas also. Great work!

In today's session, we continued to work on the review packet for the student's math final. Most of the work today was focused on circles, inscribed angles, and trig laws. She was able to really understand the problems on circles and angles, but did seem to have some trouble with trig laws. We are going to continue to work on trig laws tomorrow as well as work to complete the entire review packet.
