The student and I worked on the math section of the SSAT. He received his scores from his previous SSAT, and did extremely well! We will work more on the math section during our final week, especially question comprehension.

Today we met for the first time. We talked about scheduling sessions so that we can use our time the best. I then described the test to her, discussing each section and its various parts. Then we started going over a difficult upper level math section. She is very good at math and as long as she stays focused and calm, she should do very well on the math section. I assigned her an entire practice test for next Wednesday, including the essay. Then we can start seeing where she needs help and where she is fine on her own.

In this session, the student and I spent most of our time on math. We reviewed concepts from last week (dividing with fractions and proportions), and also did review on geometry concepts we covered a while ago (area, perimeter, properties of triangles, supplementary angles). She did great on this review! We then worked on some practice tests. I timed her, and she worked on a practice math section (13 problems in 15 minutes), so she could pace herself accordingly. She did very well with the timing. After she finished, we discussed the problems she missed. On some problems she missed, she rushed and did not fully read the problem. On others, she got halfway through solving the problem, and then took a guess. In math, we will continue to work on helping her understand the steps necessary for completing problems. I also continue to help her practice important test-taking tricks, like moving the decimal point when dividing or multiplying by a multiple of ten. Next week, we will review some more important math test strategies. She and I also worked on verbal. She did part of a practice section (10 problems in 5 minutes), to practice the pacing. Again, she did well with the time. She missed about half of the verbal problems she worked on. That said, her educated guesses were quite strong -- a sign that all of her hard work on vocabulary is making a difference. In these last few weeks before the test, I will continue to emphasize vocabulary with her.

The student and I practiced skills and strategies for multiplying and dividing negative and positive integers, order of operations and adding and subtracting fractions, including problems that contained variables. We also completed some reading and comprehension practice. She did well overall, but could use a little more practice on order of operations. She agreed to work on her vocabulary list for the week and to practice some problems on the tutoring portal solving algebraic equations, since we will work on that next week. She could also benefit from further practice throughout the week with order of operations on the tutoring portal, as well.

The student and I reviewed a full test he took for today's session. The math gave him very little trouble, whereas the verbal and reading sections were more difficult. I asked him to write sentences for the vocabulary from this test for next time, and we will continue to do that with an eye toward solidifying his vocabulary quickly, but effectively. We reviewed tricks and strategies for more efficient reading, and then discussed the writing section. He showed me an essay he had written previously, and we assessed the strengths and weaknesses. He will write a timed essay for next time.

The student and I reviewed dependent clauses and verbals, and we did a few more practice sections for those. The last ten minutes were spent going over the various kinds of nouns, which we'll finish looking at Friday.
