The student and I continued our work on the writing and reading sections. She is doing better on the writing section overall. She is struggling the most with punctuation, transition words, and pronouns so we went over those concepts in detail. On the reading section her timing is still a bit behind but she is doing better with accuracy. We went over ways to use the question stem clues to find the necessary information in the passage.

The student and I continued to practice strategies for the SAT Reading test. We talked through the procedure for one passage together and then the student did two timed passages on his own. Although he struggled more under the time pressure, his accuracy was still high, and I think practice will make him more comfortable with the timing. We then reviewed two strategies for ACT and SAT math: working with the answers and plugging in numbers. He is behind math-wise due to his age, but after taking Algebra 2 this year and with these strategies in his toolkit, I think he can do very well on the math tests.

The student and I continued to take practice tests for the SAT. For reading, we focused on main idea, vocabulary definitions, tone, purpose, and supporting evidence from the passage. For writing, we worked on agreement, transitions, revising paragraphs, phrasing, and logic. For math, we focused on writing systems of equations to represent and solve a word problem, percentages, probability, statistics, and graphing. He did excellently in all sections. Math is his strongest section. We may need more practice with critical reading.

The student and I continued to work on content for the math section. We started by working with imaginary numbers. I had him rationalize fractions with i in the denominator. I then had him do several questions that required performing operations with with i. I also went through the different types of numbers and how to use those definitions on the test. I had him work with radicals as well, especially simplifying radicals. We then started on geometry. I had him do questions with similar figures, special right triangles, filling containers, and finding the difference of known volumes. I then had him do several questions with circles. We finished by doing two writing and language passages. He should be able to do well on this section of the test.

The student and I continued to work on SAT math. First, we reviewed story problems tips and techniques. Next I had her do a timed non-calculator section, and we went through the answers together. She only missed five questions overall. At the end, we had time for her to do six calculator section questions, and she got all of them right. At our next session, I'd like to finish up the calculator section and get an overall math score.
