Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

For our last tutoring session, we began by first going over the student's reflection on a quote from "Their Eyes Were Watching God." This was a short-response reflection we had worked on together a few weeks earlier. I reread the reflection, made suggestions on particular segments (mostly on paragraph transition and word choice), and asked her to focus on those revisions. She asked me to read a brief essay she had had to read in class and write a timed response for; after reading this essay, she discussed her response to it and I explained how certain arguments could use more nuance whereas others were working quite well. We discussed in particular how she pointed out the author's use of hyperbole and diction as rhetorical devices. I then went over various grammar exercises she had completed on participial clauses and sentence variation. The student had a strong grasp of the material and the review went very well. I have definitely noticed improvement in her writing and analytical skills since we've begun and I'm confident that she'll continue to do her better in her studies if she continues her dedicated focus on her work.

Today we worked on the outline for the student's AP language research paper. It was the third stage of the outline, meaning we now are incorporating her research into the outline as evidence, and linking it to the overall thesis and individual "chapters" which break up the paper. It took time because we needed to go through her annotated bibliography to find the research required for the different points, as well as do some additional research on areas lacking in support. We completed half of the outline, she is going to talk to her teacher in class tomorrow and we will complete it Tuesday afternoon.

We began going over a practice test. We went over two multiple choice sections, discussing how to narrow down answers and how to most effectively use time. We began discussing the rhetorical analysis essay and how to effectively format an essay response in which he is being made to compare two sources.

I had the student read several articles about finding the treasure off of Florida from the Spanish Fleet of 1715. I had him compare and contrast two articles about finding the treasure and then read this long article about the history of it. Then we did a couple of short articles about birds flying in v shape and about a guy who built St. Peter's Basilica out of legos. He did well tonight.

The student and I spent most of this session reading "The Wild Ones" by C. Alexander London. We would take turns reading pages so he not only was able to practice his reading skills by out-loud reading but he would also follow along while I read at a reasonable pace so he could read the words that were unfamiliar to him while listening to their pronunciation and getting a feel for the sentence structure. He did a good job staying focused for most of the session. Towards the end, we stopped reading and discussed the characters and plot, and he wrote a few sentences summarizing what we read.

We discussed what exactly needs to be tutored: i.e. reading comprehension and writing, preparation for the TOEFL and the ISEE. We also discussed the schools they want to get into. During the session, we read the beginning of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, in order to get an idea of their reading level. We decided to have them both read Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief, which is appropriate for both grade levels, and we'll discuss it during our sessions and write about it. I am very excited to work with them on their reading and writing. They are both very bright, ask great questions, and I think we will have a good time doing the work necessary to get into the private school of their choice.
