The student and I covered SAT strategy in advance of his test on Saturday, including the scoring of multiple-choice and grid-in questions and the essay. We discussed plans of attack for each section such as completing easy questions first, using the process of elimination, and leaving questions blank when he cannot eliminate at least one answer. We covered what scorers are looking for in the essay, the most common problem areas in the writing section, how to approach sentence completion and passage-based reading questions, and how to focus on the easy and medium-level questions in the math sections.

The student and I began by setting a schedule for him in the coming months ahead of his October test dates. I told him I would send him extra practice that he can do at home. After that, we began by practicing a number of reading passages. He did very well on these passages. His pacing and accuracy has improved greatly, and I now believe he is on pace to score very well on test day. After completing those passages, we worked on a non-calculator math section. He did very well at the beginning of the section both in terms of pacing and accuracy. He began to struggle with the harder question types in the middle of the section. I walked him through the questions he did not know how to answer, illustrating the solution and explaining the math concepts involved.

The student and I completed a final review with an emphasis on grammar, reading, and ACT science. On the grammar section, we focused on paragraph development, noun/verb agreement, and prepositional phrases, while on the reading section, we did a final review of test-taking strategies, including splitting answer choices and reading for context. On the science section, he was more comfortable with passages that did not involve graphs/ tables, but he was able to adjust quickly to reading/interpreting the information.

The student and I completed a practice test to simulate the problem. He got 13 out of 15 questions correct on his own, with one wrong answer due to clicking the inverse to the correct answer (a > b rather than a < b) and another, specifically a word problem, due to a small step. He might have been able to correct it on his own if he had checked the work afterwards but, in the interest of time, I asked him to simply review a step and make sure it was correct. At this stage, there are small errors that separate him from a perfect score. If he checks his work at the end (as he is doing as a test strategy), he is more likely to catch errors. He is well prepared to take the test and should do quite well, with his average test scores in the 90s. He has worked consistently on his problems, and I am confident he will do well on the actual test.
